Once again Ireland’s busy state bodies are hoping to ensure that Halloween celebrations are a damp squib - by threatening anyone caught in posession of a banger with prosectution.
Gardaí have warned of the risk of injury and damage to property and Dublin Fire Brigade is promoting ‘safe playing’.
The majority of fireworks sold are smuggled in from the North, a jurisdiction with rather more experience of gunpowder and explosives, where they remain legal.
Happily the fearless Sunday Tribune newspaper undertook an ‘investigation’ into the trade in illegal fireworks - by buying some from a man who advertised on the internet. It is not known if the Tribune has reported this evil-doer to the authorities.
The Tribune’s report opens with the fact that Dublin City Council has set aside €1m for cleaning up after the city celebrates, nicely setting the tone as being one of the wasteful and antisocial behaviour of fiends rather than an opportunity for friends to come together and have some fun.
